Mercedes-Benz CLA Review: Almost the Perfect Car

This Mercedes-Benz CLA review explains why its brilliant driving dynamics, beautiful styling and extraordinary technology make it almost perfect.

By Nik J. Miles | Test Miles

I’m always searching for the most perfect car. It’s a rather ridiculous occupation, because the moment I find one that seems to have everything, something inevitably spoils it. The seats are uncomfortable. The steering is lifeless. The technology requires a computer science degree. Or the exterior looks as though somebody designed it during a particularly unpleasant migraine.

But I think I may finally have found it.

The new Mercedes-Benz CLA is one of those rare automobiles that seems to understand what driving enthusiasts actually want. It’s beautiful, comfortable, wonderfully nimble, exhilarating when the road gets interesting, and sufficiently intelligent to make some much more expensive cars appear distinctly behind the times.

It’s fast without being intimidating, sophisticated without feeling cumbersome, and remarkably easy to live with. Mercedes appears to have remembered something important: a car should make you want to drive it.

There are, however, two significant problems. We’ll come to those.

Mercedes-Benz CLA Review: Driving Is the Best Part

I’ve driven an extraordinary number of vehicles over the years, from modest family sedans to machines with more horsepower than common sense. The ones that stay with me aren’t necessarily the most powerful or expensive. They’re the cars that feel right.

That’s what makes the CLA so appealing. It’s exhilarating and nimble, yet wonderfully approachable. There’s an easy confidence to the way it drives that makes ordinary journeys enjoyable and an interesting stretch of road something to look forward to.

The electric CLA 250+ develops 268 horsepower, driving the rear wheels. Mercedes estimates zero to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds. The CLA 350 4MATIC produces 349 horsepower through two motors, with a claimed 4.8-second sprint to 60 mph.

Both figures are more than respectable. But horsepower doesn’t explain the real attraction. It’s the combination of responsive acceleration, manageable dimensions, controlled body movement and comfort that makes this package so persuasive.

Mercedes has also fitted its electric drivetrain with a two-speed transmission. The engineering allows the motor to operate efficiently across different driving conditions, rather than relying on the single fixed ratio common to many electric cars.

It all contributes to an automobile that feels engineered around the driver rather than a collection of impressive specifications.

Finally, an Electric Mercedes That Looks Beautiful

I’ll admit something. I’ve never been entirely convinced that every electric Mercedes has been a triumph of exterior design. Some earlier models looked suspiciously like expensive bars of soap that had spent too long in a wind tunnel.

The CLA is different. Beautifully different.

There’s a graceful sweep to the roofline, a confident stance, beautifully judged proportions and just enough visual drama to make the car interesting without becoming vulgar. The illuminated front treatment and distinctive lighting make it unmistakably contemporary.

Better still, those elegant lines aren’t merely decoration. Aerodynamic versions achieve a drag coefficient as low as 0.21, contributing to efficiency and highway range.

That matters because reducing wind resistance becomes increasingly valuable as speeds rise. It’s intelligent design serving a practical purpose, which is exactly what good automotive engineering should accomplish.

The CLA manages something many manufacturers have forgotten: it looks expensive without trying desperately to prove it.

Technology That Makes Other Luxury Cars Feel Old

The cabin is equally ambitious. Mercedes has introduced its MB.OS operating system, connecting navigation, infotainment, vehicle functions and digital services through a sophisticated software architecture.

The available MBUX Superscreen transforms the dashboard into an expansive digital environment. AI-enhanced voice assistance can interpret more conversational requests, while the navigation system is designed to incorporate charging considerations into electric journeys.

There’s a difference between technology that’s impressive during a showroom demonstration and technology that improves the ownership experience. The CLA has the hardware and software foundations to do both, although buyers should check which features are included and which require additional payment.

Mercedes also provides available driver assistance technologies, including systems designed to support speed control and steering under appropriate conditions. They help reduce workload but don’t replace an attentive driver.

The company’s broader approach to software is important because modern vehicles increasingly depend on updates long after leaving the factory. The CLA feels like an early expression of where Mercedes intends its entire lineup to go.

The Range and Charging Are Extraordinary

For the CLA 250+, Mercedes quotes an EPA-estimated 374 miles of electric range. The quicker CLA 350 4MATIC delivers an EPA-estimated 312 miles. Those are genuinely useful figures for people who want an electric car that can handle everyday life and longer journeys.

The 800-volt electrical architecture is particularly interesting. Mercedes says the battery can accept up to 320 kilowatts of DC charging power and gain as much as 202 miles of range in approximately 10 minutes under ideal conditions.

Public charging stations don’t all provide the same power, of course, and actual charging times vary. But this capability has the potential to make electric road trips considerably more convenient.

The EPA electric vehicle label gives shoppers a consistent way to examine efficiency and range estimates. Real-world results will still depend on speed, temperature and driving habits.

For owners who can charge at home, the Department of Energy’s guidance on home charging explains why overnight charging can make an electric vehicle particularly convenient.

And for shoppers comparing electric and hybrid alternatives, the federal explanation of electric vehicle technology provides useful background on the differences between battery-electric and hybrid powertrains.

Comfort and Everyday Usability Matter Just as Much

Plenty of cars can deliver startling acceleration. Far fewer manage to combine responsive handling with a relaxing, comfortable driving experience. This is where I find the CLA’s overall character especially convincing.

It feels easy to drive, nimble enough to be entertaining and refined enough to make a long journey appealing. You don’t need to drive like a racing driver to appreciate a well-balanced chassis, and you shouldn’t have to sacrifice ride comfort to enjoy a corner.

Practicality is the inevitable compromise. This is a compact four-door fastback, not an enormous family transporter. Rear-seat room and luggage requirements deserve attention before signing the paperwork.

Pricing begins at $47,950 for the 2027 CLA 250+ Electric and $50,500 for the CLA 350 4MATIC Electric, before destination charges and options. There’s also a CLA 220 Hybrid starting at $43,900 for buyers who prefer gasoline convenience with electric assistance.

One concern is Mercedes’ optional-equipment structure. It’s easy to admire a beautifully equipped demonstration car without realizing how many appealing features carry additional charges. Compare actual window stickers, available equipment and the final transaction price rather than assuming every impressive screen and assistance feature comes standard.

The Two Things Wrong With the Mercedes CLA

After years of searching, analyzing and driving cars, I’ve come to appreciate that perfection isn’t about having the biggest engine, the largest touchscreen or the most extravagant price tag. It’s about how successfully everything works together.

The CLA gets extraordinarily close to my idea of the ideal modern car. It looks fantastic. The technology is impressive. It’s fast, agile, comfortable and easy to drive. It has the kind of dynamic personality that makes you choose the longer road home simply because you’re enjoying yourself.

Is it objectively the best car ever made? Of course not. Different drivers have different priorities, and the perfect family SUV is unlikely to be the perfect sports sedan. But judged as an engaging, sophisticated everyday luxury car, the CLA makes an exceptionally strong case.

Which brings me to the two things that prevent it from being perfect.

Number one: It doesn’t come in a wagon.

Mercedes, if you’re listening, please fix this. Give me that beautiful CLA styling, those driving dynamics, that remarkable technology and a proper wagon body. More luggage space, more practicality and all the pleasure of driving something that doesn’t resemble a refrigerator on wheels.

Number two: I don’t own one.

And frankly, Mercedes, that’s an even more serious oversight.

Fix those two little problems, and my search for the perfect car might finally be over.
