2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Obsidian 4×4

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Obsidian 4×4

“A Heritage Full Size Luxury SUV”

 By Arv Voss

OVERVIEW:

There’s a new vehicle in the SUV arena – sort of. Production of this revered popular model SUV actually ended some thirty years ago and now enter the return of the iconic nameplate offered in two forms – the base model Jeep Wagoneer and the considerably more upscale Grand Wagoneer, which is slated to enhance the model lineup by adding an extra 12-inches in length to future versions of both models.

 PROPULSION:

The base Wagoneer’s powerplant is a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, while the Grand Wagoneer ups the ante with Jeep’s inaugural use of the company’s 6.4-liter V8 which cranks out 471 horsepower along with 455 pound feet of torque. This comandy when towing up to a 10,000 pound load. A welded Class 4 comes standard. Both engines feature cylinder deactibvationThe transmission of choice for both big Jeep SUVs is an 8-speed automatic with overdrive routing power to all four wheels. There are three different transfer cases to choose from depending on your intended use. Could there also be a 4xe model waiting in the wings?

EXTERIOR DESIGN:

Both the Base Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer project a “Large and In Charge” image. There are some subtle styling cues the differentiate the two models, but missing on both for those who remember the original is the faux wood side paneling. However, the iconic 7-slot grille (though highly modified) remains along with the really large windows from a local tx and store upright side pillars. Each model has its own identity with different headlight treatments and upper grille finishes along with bumpers, lower grilles, tailgates and license plate holders. Also different are the hood designs. The Grand Wagoneer stands apart as the most exclusive model with its gloss black roof finish.

INTERIOR STYLING:

The entire cabin space is well laid out, with the dash showcasing the high tech nature. The two-spoke steering wheel is comfortable, with fingertip controls for key features including the infotainment system. There’s even a toggle switch provided in place of paddle shifters for manually changing gears. With the optional passenger touchscreen, there’s a full 45 inches of IP video screens. The key factor that is readily apparent, is the amount of space and the level of comfort for all occupants that borders on Business-class airline travel. The tasteful use of wood leather and chrome elements add touches of opulence.

Connectivity and infotainment features are state of the art and in abundance.

SAFETY AND TECHNOLOGY:

Some automotive use firsts include Amazon’s streaming Fire TV technology along with the application of a McIntosh sound system with up to 23 speakers. There are screens up the wazoo including a 10-inch Head Up Display. There are more than a dozen USB A and C plugs, satellite radio, wireless smartphone charging.

The Grand Wagoneer comes with Jeep’s Quadra Lift four corner air suspension system with semi-active damping and ride height control.

AS TESTED:

My test Jeep was a Grand Wagoneer Obsiidian 4×4.It wore a Silver Zynith metallic lower finish and sported the gloss Black roof. The base sticker read $94,845. Which rose to $109,025. After factoring in the optional costs which included: the Si;lver Paint, Customer Preferred Package, the Convenoence Group, Heavy Duty Trailer Tow Package, Rear seat Entertainent Group and Destination charge.

PERFORMANCE:

Considering its nearly three-ton mass, the Grand Wagoneer rides smoothly and holds the road remarkably well – better than many competitors. The 6.4 liter V-8 packs plenty of punch on demand, but the resulting fuel consumption affects the fuel gauge’s decline rapidly. The combined EPA rating is 15 mpg (13 City, 18 Highway.

OUR FINAL TAKE:

Once one gets past the hefty over the century mark price tag for a Jeep, the Grand Wagoneer is a truly remarkable full size SUV that delivers luxurious travel in comfort with a claimed design total of 120 safety features. The hidden self-deploying running boards, adjustable height pedals, incredible sound system and impressive handling are enough to offset the lack of wood side paneling, which would actually come across as offensive on this modern reincarnation of the Grand Wagoneer.
