Editorial Standards and Ethics Policy

Test Miles is an independent, journalist-led automotive news and reviews publisher. Founder Nik J. Miles has worked as a journalist since 1988. Our mission is to inform American drivers through accurate, accessible and independent reporting, interviews, vehicle assessments, safety news and analysis.

Independence

Editorial decisions are made by Test Miles, not by automakers, advertisers, sponsors or distributors. Commercial relationships do not guarantee coverage or favorable conclusions. Editors retain control of headlines, story framing, assessments and recommendations.

Reporting, Accuracy and Attribution

Our journalists verify material facts using original reporting, primary records, official technical and regulatory documentation and credible independent sources. Vehicle specifications, MSRP and destination charges, fuel economy, charging estimates, safety ratings, recall information, model years and availability must be checked for the relevant market and date. Manufacturer claims and projections are identified as such and never passed off as independently verified testing. Original reporting is attributed appropriately; direct quotations must accurately represent the source. We distinguish fact, opinion, analysis, manufacturer claims and information not independently confirmed.

Vehicle Reviews and First-Hand Experience

We clearly distinguish firsthand drives and testing from research-based analysis. A story must not claim a vehicle was personally driven, measured or tested by Test Miles unless that occurred. Editors review buyer recommendations for appropriate evidence and context.

Fairness and Sources

We seek relevant perspectives and a reasonable opportunity for response where serious criticism is involved. Anonymous sources require editorial justification and appropriate verification. We respect copyright and do not knowingly publish unattributed third-party reporting or material.

Commercial Relationships and Disclosures

Sponsored articles, paid placements, affiliate relationships and advertising must be recognizable and, where applicable, labeled. Relevant manufacturer-provided travel, lodging, hospitality, loaned vehicles and material financial relationships are disclosed where appropriate. Receipt of a review vehicle or event invitation does not entitle a company to editorial control.

Technology, Images and Media Integrity

Technology-assisted research, writing and production remain subject to journalist and editor oversight and factual review. Automatically generated text is not itself an authoritative source. We do not present synthetic images, constructed scenes, simulated statements, altered recordings or misleading composites as authentic documentary evidence. Material synthetic or manipulated media are identified when omission would mislead the audience.

Prepublication Review

Before publication, the responsible journalist or editor checks the story’s factual claims, key numbers, quotes, sourcing, headline, context, image rights, relevant disclosures and clarity. Editorial leadership retains final responsibility. We review and correct substantive factual mistakes when identified.

Corrections, Updates and Accountability

Material factual errors are corrected promptly after verification. A dated correction notice remains on the article and describes the original error and accurate information. New developments may be labeled as updates; routine copyedits that do not change meaning need no formal correction. Read our Corrections and Updates Policy. Corrections may be requested at nik@testmiles.com, with the article URL and supporting evidence.
