This 2026 Ram 2500 Power Wagon review explains its off-road strengths, towing limitations, V8 appeal and why it makes sense for adventure buyers.

By Nik J. Miles

There are sensible trucks, and then there are trucks that make you question whether being sensible is terribly overrated.

The Ram 2500 Power Wagon belongs firmly in the second category.

It’s enormous. It has a naturally aspirated HEMI V8, four-wheel drive, locking differentials at both ends and enough specialized off-road equipment to make a weekend in the wilderness sound like a perfectly reasonable alternative to a luxury hotel.

And yet the most interesting thing about this truck isn’t how extreme it is.

It’s how much sense it could make for the right buyer.

Most pickup shoppers probably don’t need something this capable. But if your lifestyle involves camping, remote property, difficult terrain, recreational trailers or simply going places where the pavement stopped several miles ago, the Power Wagon deserves serious consideration.

This is a specification-based vehicle analysis. No firsthand 2026 Power Wagon driving record or original Test Miles measurements were available for this assessment.

Why the Power Wagon is different from an ordinary Ram 2500

Plenty of expensive pickups look ready to invade a mountain.

Sometimes that means dark wheels, large decals and a suspension arrangement that has rather more confidence than its driver.

The Power Wagon takes a more serious approach.

Its mechanical equipment is designed to improve traction and suspension movement on difficult terrain.

Electronic locking front and rear differentials can help maintain traction when individual wheels begin losing grip. A disconnecting front stabilizer bar allows greater suspension articulation when negotiating uneven ground.

Ram also installs its Articulink front suspension, Bilstein dampers, a factory lift and 33-inch all-terrain tires.

Why should a buyer care?

Because an expensive off-road truck should deliver more than an adventurous appearance.

The Power Wagon’s hardware addresses the actual difficulties that arise when a large vehicle encounters rocks, ruts, uneven surfaces and limited traction.

Its factory-engineered combination is particularly appealing to buyers who might otherwise modify a conventional truck.

Those modifications can become expensive, complicated and difficult to evaluate as a complete vehicle package.

The Power Wagon provides a more coherent starting point.

That doesn’t make it invincible. Its size and weight remain relevant limitations, and safe off-road driving requires appropriate judgment regardless of equipment.

A HEMI V8 is still a persuasive reason to buy

Under the hood is a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 producing 405 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque.

Power goes through an eight-speed automatic transmission to the four-wheel-drive system.

In a market increasingly populated by turbocharged engines, the naturally aspirated HEMI offers a traditional approach to heavy-duty gasoline power.

It’s important not to confuse that appeal with an unsupported claim that the V8 is more reliable or economical than a smaller turbocharged engine. Those questions require ownership data and comparable testing.

What buyers are getting is a substantial gasoline engine combined with gearing and equipment intended for controlled progress over demanding terrain.

Ram isn’t trying to turn the Power Wagon into a high-speed desert racing truck. Its personality is more deliberate.

Think of climbing a difficult trail while carrying camping supplies rather than trying to set a speed record between two sand dunes.

The towing problem buyers need to understand

Here’s where the Power Wagon requires a little honesty.

Despite being a heavy-duty pickup, the gasoline version has a maximum towing capacity of 10,590 pounds and a maximum payload of 1,570 pounds, according to Ram.

Those are useful figures, but they are not the numbers many shoppers associate with a Ram 2500.

Specialized off-road suspension allows the Power Wagon to perform particularly well over uneven terrain, but the same design priorities limit the weight it can carry compared with conventional heavy-duty configurations.

Payload includes more than equipment placed in the bed.

Passengers, luggage, accessories and trailer tongue weight all contribute.

Suppose a properly configured trailer places 900 pounds of tongue weight on the truck.

Against a 1,570-pound maximum payload allowance, that leaves approximately 670 pounds for everything else. The actual vehicle may have a lower payload rating.

Four passengers and their equipment could exhaust that allowance quickly.

The point isn’t that the Power Wagon cannot tow. It can handle many recreational towing jobs.

The point is that shoppers should calculate the complete loaded weight rather than selecting a truck from its advertised trailer rating alone.

Anyone regularly pulling particularly heavy travel trailers or fifth-wheel trailers should compare other configurations before choosing the gasoline Power Wagon.

Our heavy-duty truck towing comparison provides additional context about choosing a truck for demanding towing duties.

Could you live with a Power Wagon every day?

That depends partly on where you live.

The Power Wagon is sold as a four-wheel-drive Crew Cab with a 6-foot, 4-inch cargo bed.

The arrangement makes considerable sense for families who regularly carry outdoor equipment.

Passengers get a separate cabin while muddy boots, camping gear, tools and other equipment can travel in the bed.

Parents carrying children, pets and luggage may find the combination particularly useful.

But a tall heavy-duty pickup introduces compromises that aren’t visible in a dramatic mountain photograph.

Getting into the cabin requires more effort than entering a typical crossover. A large pickup can be inconvenient in parking structures, narrow residential streets and crowded supermarket car parks.

That matters if the vehicle will spend five days commuting for every two days exploring.

I would strongly recommend checking the dimensions against your garage and driving a Power Wagon through the sort of streets and parking areas you use regularly before ordering one.

Pay particular attention to visibility, turning space, step height and how easily family members can climb aboard.

These are the everyday details that determine whether a vehicle remains enjoyable after the novelty wears off.

Does all this off-road hardware make the ride better?

The Power Wagon uses specialized suspension components and a rear coil-spring arrangement rather than the conventional rear leaf springs found in some competing heavy-duty pickups.

That design gives Ram opportunities to balance suspension articulation with everyday ride control.

It would be tempting to declare that this automatically makes the Power Wagon more comfortable than every rival.

It would also be irresponsible without a comparable road test.

The questions worth investigating on a test drive are specific.

How does the truck react to broken pavement when the bed is empty? Does it settle promptly after a large bump? How much tire noise reaches the cabin at highway speeds? Is steering predictable on narrow roads?

Large off-road tires, substantial ground clearance and heavy-duty suspension components can influence all of those characteristics.

Buyers should assess the ride on familiar roads rather than assuming a premium price guarantees luxury-car comfort.

Technology that earns its place

The Power Wagon can be equipped with a 14.5-inch Uconnect touchscreen and a 10.25-inch front-passenger display through upper equipment packages.

That is an impressive amount of screen space, although screen size alone doesn’t make a vehicle easier to operate.

For a truck of this size, cameras and parking assistance can be more valuable than additional entertainment features.

Available trailer-related technology can also help drivers manage the complications of maneuvering a large vehicle with an attached trailer.

Buyers should confirm which cameras, screens and towing assistance features are included in the particular equipment package they intend to purchase.

The same applies to driver-assistance systems.

Adaptive cruise control and other electronic assistance features can reduce certain driving demands, but they do not make the truck self-driving.

Before purchase, check the specific model’s safety equipment, outstanding recalls and applicable crash-test information through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

How much should you spend on a Power Wagon?

Ram currently advertises a starting MSRP of $73,250 for the 2026 Power Wagon, before applicable additional charges and optional equipment.

That price buys access to the truck’s specialized factory off-road hardware rather than merely a luxury-oriented trim package.

The decision becomes more complicated when adding upper equipment groups.

Among the available upgrades are premium audio, larger displays, improved interior appointments and a factory-integrated WARN winch.

The Power Wagon Level 2 Equipment Group includes the WARN Zeon-12 winch rated at 12,000 pounds, along with Mopar rock rails.

For someone regularly traveling into isolated territory, recovery equipment may be a more useful purchase than decorative luxury upgrades.

For a buyer whose adventures involve maintained forest roads and occasional camping trips, the additional equipment might be unnecessary.

One particularly interesting option is the Lunar Edition.

Ram announced the 2026 Power Wagon Lunar Edition at $86,385 including destination, with Ceramic Grey paint, Diamond Black lower-body treatment and Copperhead Orange interior stitching.

It certainly has visual appeal.

Whether the appearance and luxury equipment justify its price is another question.

My preference would be to start with the standard Power Wagon, identify the off-road and safety equipment genuinely needed, and resist treating the options catalogue as a personal challenge.

See the official Ram Power Wagon specifications and pricing and Ram’s Lunar Edition announcement for the manufacturer’s published details.

Should you wait for the 2027 Power Wagon diesel?

This is potentially the most important buying question for anyone shopping later in 2026.

Ram has introduced a 2027 Power Wagon with its 6.7-liter Cummins high-output turbo-diesel.

The diesel produces 430 horsepower and 1,075 pound-feet of torque.

Ram quotes nearly 20,000 pounds of towing capacity and almost 3,000 pounds of payload, depending on specification.

That substantially changes the kinds of jobs the Power Wagon can handle.

The diesel also receives an advertised estimated range of approximately 600 miles from its 31-gallon fuel tank. That is a manufacturer estimate, not an independent real-world result.

Its starting price is $88,470 including destination.

There are significant differences between the gasoline and diesel trucks beyond their engines.

The diesel’s additional weight and engineering requirements change aspects of its off-road performance, while the gasoline model retains the advantage of an available integrated winch.

Buyers planning to tow heavy trailers regularly have a strong reason to investigate the diesel.

Those prioritizing difficult trails, a traditional gasoline V8 and a lower purchase price may prefer the HEMI.

The official 2027 Power Wagon diesel announcement explains the new engine and its capability figures.

What should you compare before buying?

There are several legitimate alternatives, but their appeal depends on what you expect your pickup to accomplish.

Ram 2500 Rebel

The Rebel deserves consideration if you want off-road styling and capability while placing greater emphasis on conventional truck duties.

It offers a different balance of equipment, towing and powertrain choices. For buyers who travel mainly on pavement while occasionally visiting rough campsites, it may be the more appropriate Ram.

Ford Super Duty Tremor

Ford’s Tremor off-road package is worth considering if you want a heavy-duty truck with enhanced trail equipment while retaining substantial towing capability.

Compare the exact F-250 configuration, engine, suspension equipment, payload and pricing rather than assuming two off-road packages provide identical hardware.

Chevrolet Silverado HD ZR2

Chevrolet offers its own specialized heavy-duty off-road solution through the Silverado HD ZR2.

Its suspension engineering and equipment priorities differ from those of the Power Wagon, making a back-to-back evaluation worthwhile.

If you only need an ordinary full-size truck, you may also want to investigate less expensive half-ton alternatives, including our 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 buying analysis.

The most expensive off-road truck isn’t automatically the right one. Decide what you actually intend to do with it before comparing prices.

Final verdict: a very good reason to buy an unreasonable truck

Most people don’t need locking differentials at both ends of their pickup.

They don’t need a disconnecting front stabilizer bar, specialized suspension joints or an optional 12,000-pound winch.

Most people don’t need a particularly expensive mechanical watch capable of surviving deep underwater, either.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t considerable satisfaction in owning something engineered to perform a difficult job properly.

The Power Wagon makes sense when its capability will become part of your life rather than remaining an expensive collection of unused features.

For owners who regularly travel on remote trails, visit recreational properties or want a factory-built truck equipped for demanding adventures, it offers an unusually focused package.

Its greatest weakness is its relatively modest payload for such a substantial pickup. Buyers who routinely haul heavy loads or pull large trailers should take that limitation seriously.

My recommendation is straightforward.

Buy the gasoline Power Wagon if off-road ability is your priority and its towing and payload ratings comfortably cover your needs.

Consider the new diesel if your adventures involve significantly heavier trailers and equipment.

Choose a conventional pickup if the most challenging obstacle in your week is finding a parking space outside the supermarket.

The Power Wagon isn’t the sensible choice for everyone.

For the right person, that’s exactly what makes it worth buying.

2026 Ram 2500 Power Wagon FAQ

Is the 2026 Ram 2500 Power Wagon worth buying?

Yes, for buyers who regularly need substantial off-road capability and appreciate having specialized equipment installed by the manufacturer. Its locking differentials, suspension hardware and available recovery equipment make a persuasive package. Buyers who mainly tow heavy trailers or drive on paved roads may find better value in another Ram 2500 configuration.

How much can the Power Wagon tow?

Ram advertises a maximum towing capacity of 10,590 pounds for the 2026 gasoline Power Wagon. Actual capacity depends on the individual vehicle and its equipment. Buyers must also account for trailer tongue weight, passengers and cargo. The truck’s maximum payload is 1,570 pounds, which can become the limiting factor before the maximum trailer rating is reached.

Does the Power Wagon have a diesel engine?

The 2026 gasoline Power Wagon uses a 6.4-liter HEMI V8. For 2027, Ram introduced a version with its high-output 6.7-liter Cummins turbo-diesel, producing 430 horsepower and 1,075 pound-feet of torque. The diesel provides significantly greater towing and payload capability, but has a higher purchase price and some different off-road equipment.

Is the Power Wagon good for everyday driving?

It can serve as everyday transportation, particularly for families needing a Crew Cab and pickup bed. Its size, elevated suspension and heavy-duty design introduce compromises. Buyers should test the vehicle on familiar roads, check garage clearance and consider how often they will actually use its specialized capability before making it their only vehicle.

Does the Power Wagon come with a winch?

A WARN Zeon-12 winch rated at 12,000 pounds is available through specified equipment packages on the gasoline Power Wagon. Buyers should verify the exact configuration rather than assuming every truck includes one. The newer Cummins diesel version does not provide the same integrated winch option. Safe winching requires suitable recovery equipment and training.

What is the difference between the Ram 2500 Rebel and Power Wagon?

Both target buyers interested in off-road-oriented heavy-duty trucks, but their equipment priorities differ. The Power Wagon emphasizes specialized traction hardware and suspension articulation for demanding trails. The Rebel may make greater sense for drivers balancing off-road travel with conventional towing and hauling. Compare their exact engine, payload, towing and equipment specifications before choosing.
