Toyota is giving its full-size pickup an update for 2027, adding sharper styling, more standard technology and a new Trailhunter package for buyers who want factory-built overlanding capability without moving directly into the most expensive off-road trim.

The 2027 Toyota Tundra looks more squared-off and deliberate. Toyota’s CALTY Design Research team reshaped the front end with a wider stance, vertical geometry, rectangular fog lights and trim-specific hexagonal grilles. It’s a meaningful cleanup rather than a theatrical reinvention.

The bigger changes sit behind that new face. Every Tundra now gets a standard 14-inch multimedia screen, Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 and a built-in drive recorder. Pricing, towing figures, payload ratings and specifications won’t arrive until fall 2026, making this an early look rather than a final shopping guide.

Trailhunter Brings Factory Overlanding to SR5

The Trailhunter package is based on the SR5, which should place off-road hardware within reach of more buyers. Toyota hasn’t announced a price, but describes it as a more accessible route into an adventure-ready Tundra.

Equipment includes Michelin LTX Trail 265/70R18 tires, bronze-colored wheels, an upgraded Old Man Emu suspension, front recovery hooks and added underbody protection. Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control and a locking rear differential are included.

That sounds more credible than the usual appearance package. The unanswered question is how the suspension and tires behave during daily driving, where most owners will spend their time.

Sharper Tundra Styling Avoids Costume Drama

Toyota says the new front end was designed to communicate strength and hauling confidence. The broader, more upright face gives the truck a cleaner visual center, while the lower bumper and integrated lighting make it look less busy.

Available RIGID fog lights and a brighter grille-mounted LED light bar add illumination. Details will vary by grade, allowing an SR work truck, a 1794 Edition and a TRD Pro to retain distinct personalities.

A 14-Inch Screen Is Now Standard

The latest Toyota Audio Multimedia system becomes one of the 2027 Tundra’s strongest upgrades. Its standard 14-inch display uses a smartphone-like home screen with customizable widgets, while improved “Hey Toyota” voice functions are intended to respond more quickly.

Toyota is also adding a standard drive recorder. When enabled, exterior cameras can save 20-second clips from manually selected or triggered events. That could be useful after an incident, although owners should understand the recording and privacy settings.

Available Digital Key can operate through compatible Apple, Google or Samsung wallet apps. Owners with an active Remote Connect trial or subscription can share permissions with up to five additional drivers. Near-field communication can temporarily preserve access even when a phone battery is depleted.

Gas and Hybrid Powertrains Continue

Toyota says the 2027 lineup will continue with gas and hybrid choices. The twin-turbo V6 remains the everyday engine, while the available i-FORCE MAX hybrid targets buyers seeking greater torque and responsiveness.

The release doesn’t identify revised output, fuel economy or capability figures, and Toyota hasn’t announced a major mechanical change. Hybrid grades retain an available 2.4-kilowatt inverter for powering tools, camping equipment or recreational gear.

Safety and Ownership Still Matter

Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 will be standard. The suite includes pre-collision assistance, full-speed adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, lane tracing, automatic high beams, road-sign recognition and proactive driving assistance.

Toyota also lists a three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, five-year/60,000-mile powertrain coverage and longer protection for hybrid components and the hybrid battery. ToyotaCare covers scheduled maintenance for one year or 10,000 miles, plus two years of roadside assistance.

The 2027 Tundra update focuses on useful improvements rather than change for its own sake. Trailhunter could be the most interesting addition if Toyota prices it sensibly, while the standard screen and safety upgrades benefit every trim.
