2026 Chevrolet Equinox vehicle analysis: Start With LT

This 2026 Chevrolet Equinox vehicle analysis weighs LT value, AWD choices, family space and safety to help you avoid paying for the wrong trim.
By Nik J. Miles
My starting point for a 2026 Chevrolet Equinox vehicle analysis is the LT. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are useful equipment, and Chevrolet includes them without asking you to buy the trim dressed for a mountain expedition.
This covers the U.S. gasoline model, with LT as the value benchmark and RS and ACTIV as alternatives. No 2026 test vehicle, driving notes or original measurements were supplied. The recommendation combines documented equipment, pricing and safety results with attributed driving impressions from independent publications.

2026 Chevrolet Equinox vehicle analysis: the buyer verdict
Put the LT on your shortlist if you want a gasoline family SUV with useful standard conveniences. Its biggest purchasing compromise is the absence of a hybrid option in this gasoline range. High-mileage shoppers should price hybrid rivals before deciding the cheaper initial quote settles the matter.
Best for: Buyers who value everyday equipment and will keep the final specification close to their actual needs.
Skip if: You need a third row, substantial trailer capacity or a hybrid powertrain. The separate Equinox EV requires its own shopping exercise.
Pros
- Heated front seats and steering wheel are included on LT.
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility preserve a familiar phone interface.
- Front-wheel drive and available AWD offer different configurations.
- Good IIHS updated frontal and side crash-test ratings.
Cons
- No hybrid choice within the gasoline lineup.
- Maximum cargo volume requires folding the rear seats.
- The advertised base MSRP excludes destination.
- The maximum AWD tow rating is only 1,500 pounds.

Choose the job before choosing the badge
RS is the more street-oriented appearance choice. ACTIV brings all-terrain tires on 17-inch wheels and an outdoor look. Both start above LT, but neither adds an alternative higher-output engine to this range.
That makes the buying question pleasantly specific: do you want the extra equipment and appearance enough to pay for them? There is no need to pretend a different grille will improve the school run. It may improve how you feel about the school run, which is a perfectly legitimate purchase preference.
For ACTIV, identify the tires and drivetrain on the actual sticker. An outdoor trim name is not evidence that AWD is fitted. For RS, try the selected wheel and tire combination on damaged pavement before committing.

The price ladder needs a destination line
Chevrolet’s 2026 model page lists the following base prices. Its destination-charge schedule adds $1,995 for this model year.
| Trim | Starting MSRP before destination | With destination |
|---|---|---|
| LT | $28,800 | $30,795 |
| RS | $33,600 | $35,595 |
| ACTIV | $33,600 | $35,595 |
These are starting configurations, not AWD quotes or prices as tested. Options, tax, registration and dealer fees remain additional. Ask for the complete cost of the desired drivetrain and packages before comparing trims.
The $4,800 step above LT is large enough to deserve a written list of what you gain. I would first price the LT with the conveniences I genuinely wanted, then compare it with the higher trim. Package combinations can change that result; the badge alone cannot.

| Output | 175 horsepower |
| Front-wheel drive | Continuously variable transmission |
| Available AWD | Eight-speed automatic |
| Seating | Five; two rows |

Published road tests give a clearer picture of the compromise. Edmunds’ 2026 ACTIV AWD evaluation describes delayed response to the accelerator at low speeds and limited reserve for passing with a full load. Cars.com’s 2026 coverage preferred the FWD/CVT combination, finding it more responsive than AWD. An eight-speed automatic is therefore not automatically the better-driving choice.
Comfort requires a more qualified judgment. Car and Driver’s same-generation assessment, drawing on a 2025 test, describes an agreeable ride and steering with noticeable weight. Edmunds found its 2026 ACTIV AWD handled smaller urban impacts better than larger highway humps, after which the body took longer to settle. That distinction makes an uneven-road drive especially useful.
The reports do not establish a common noise verdict: Edmunds considered its tested configuration quiet at speed, while Car and Driver flags highway cabin noise. Different vehicles and test conditions may contribute, but the reporting does not isolate the cause. There is also insufficient agreement here to assign every trim the same braking or steering character.
My reading of that evidence is to treat the Equinox as everyday transport with limited performance ambition. If quick overtaking, tightly controlled body movement or highway hush tops your list, drive the alternatives back to back. For ordinary use, judge the actual FWD or AWD vehicle on your normal roads before paying extra for a configuration whose advantages you may not need.

What changed, and what an older owner should check
The major redesign arrived for 2025. The 2026 belongs to that generation; it should not be described as an all-new redesign simply because it is newer than the vehicle in your driveway.
Chevrolet now also lists a 2027 Equinox. When shopping remaining 2026 vehicles, obtain a separate quote for the newer model year. A lower-priced 2026 can be sensible, but an assumed clearance discount is not a discount until it appears in writing.
Make the family and the dog part of the fitting
The 60/40 folding rear seat lets you preserve some passenger space while carrying a longer item. The advertised maximum volume uses the folded seating area, so examine the luggage space with the seats upright before imagining a family holiday.
Bring the dog crate. Measure its height and the hatch opening, then check whether passengers and luggage can remain in their proper places. A large dog and a suitcase are remarkably effective at exposing optimistic packing plans.
Install your child seats and adjust the front seats for the people who will actually use them. Check access to buckles, door clearance in a parking bay and the effort required to help a child aboard. Those are fitting questions, not conclusions that a brochure can provide.
Try the available power liftgate if reach or lifting effort is a concern. It may be worth more to your household than a sunroof. For a different electrified family option, read our 2026 Hyundai Tucson PHEV Review: Smart Buy Before Redesign?

The phone demonstration should happen before signing
Connect your own phone and perform the tasks you normally use: start a route, play audio and make a parked hands-free call. Wireless smartphone compatibility is documented for the gasoline Equinox. Do not transfer assumptions about GM’s electric vehicles to this model.
Google built-in adds another interface choice, but Chevrolet’s documentation says selected services require a service plan and may require account linking. Ask which services are included, how long the inclusion lasts and what happens when it ends.
During that demonstration, find the temperature adjustment, defrost function and camera controls. Screen dimensions do not establish how easily you can perform a task. A system earns its place by helping you spend less time operating it.

Fuel economy is the reason to price a hybrid rival
The EPA and Department of Energy’s 2026 Fuel Economy Guide lists 26 city, 29 highway and 27 combined mpg for FWD. AWD receives 25 city, 29 highway and 26 combined mpg. These are official estimates; no Test Miles measured economy is available.
At an illustrative 12,000 miles a year and $3.50 per gallon, the difference between 27 and 26 mpg is about $60 annually. That calculation makes clear why the AWD decision should revolve around your traction needs and purchase quote.
The Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Hyundai Tucson offer genuine alternatives for the same shopping trip. Include their hybrid configurations when recurring fuel spending matters. Compare the exact trim’s official rating, delivered price and required equipment, then test passenger and cargo fit under identical conditions.

Read the individual safety results, then decide
The IIHS gasoline Equinox ratings include Good updated moderate-overlap frontal and side results, with Acceptable small-overlap frontal performance. Headlights and child-seat attachment ease of use are Good. Those are individual evaluations, not a guarantee covering every collision.
Adaptive cruise and braking assistance support the driver. They do not remove responsibility for traffic, pedestrians or the road. Check the fitted systems and their operating limitations on the actual vehicle.
My recommendation is to start with LT, price only the equipment your household will use and compare that quote with a hybrid rival. Choose ACTIV or RS when the additional specification answers a real preference. The strongest Equinox purchase is the one that still makes sense after the decoration has stopped being new.

Is the gasoline Equinox the same vehicle as the Equinox EV?
No. This article covers the gasoline SUV. The Equinox EV is a separate electric model with different specifications and an ownership routine built around charging. Its range, charging capability and equipment should be researched separately. Sharing a name does not make the two vehicles interchangeable comparisons.
Which Equinox trim should I consider first?
Start with LT because its standard heated front seats and steering wheel answer useful everyday needs. Price the packages you want before moving upward. RS and ACTIV may suit your preferences, but compare their complete equipment against a configured LT rather than assuming the higher trim is automatically better value.
Does ACTIV automatically mean all-wheel drive?
No. Chevrolet lists AWD as available across the gasoline range. Check the actual window sticker and purchase order. ACTIV’s outdoor styling and tires do not establish drivetrain specification. If winter traction is your reason for choosing it, discuss the fitted tires as well as AWD and follow the vehicle’s operating guidance.
Can I tow a camping trailer with it?
Only if the particular vehicle’s equipment and permitted weights support the loaded trailer. Chevrolet advertises up to 1,500 pounds for qualifying AWD versions. Check the owner’s manual, vehicle labels and trailer requirements, including tongue weight and passengers. This is a limited towing allowance, so do the calculations before purchasing a trailer.
