The 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 4-Door Coupe is the new entry point to AMG’s electric grand-touring family, although “entry” is doing unusually heavy work here. Its two permanently excited synchronous motors produce a combined 536 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Mercedes estimates 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds with a one-foot rollout, or 3.8 seconds when the entire run is counted, and limits top speed electronically to 143 mph.

Those numbers place the GT 53 in serious performance-car territory without forcing it to chase the four-figure output of the GT 63. The rear motor does most of the routine work, while the front motor connects when extra acceleration or traction is needed and disconnects under light load. A two-speed transmission uses an 11:1 first ratio for the initial punch and a 5:1 second ratio for higher-speed performance and highway efficiency.

That arrangement also allows AMG Performance 4MATIC+ to move continuously between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. Separate motor control helps the system respond to wheel slip, while rear-axle torque vectoring can distribute force between the rear wheels. The engineering objective is easy to understand: deliver the efficiency of a rear-driven battery-electric vehicle when conditions allow and the security of four driven wheels when the driver asks for more.

AMG knows acceleration alone cannot preserve its identity. Electric motors are very good at producing speed, but they do not naturally deliver the rising pitch, vibration and mechanical rhythm that made generations of AMG cars memorable. A Sound Slider lets the driver choose Powerful, Balanced or Minimal delivery and move the character from Classic toward Futuristic.

This is clever, earnest work, but buyers will decide whether it feels like character or karaoke. The good news is that the theater is optional. Comfort and Eco modes can let the GT 53 behave like the quiet EV it actually is, while Sport+ exists for drivers who miss an engine’s sense of occasion. Giving owners that choice is more convincing than pretending electronic sound and combustion are the same thing.

Battery and Charging Specs Change the Conversation

Under the body sits a 106-kWh usable battery operating at 800 volts. Its 2,660 cylindrical cells are divided among 18 modules and use an NCMA cathode with a silicon-containing anode. Electrically nonconductive oil flows directly around each cell, helping the pack hold a consistent temperature during repeated acceleration and high-power charging rather than protecting a headline number that can be used only once. AMG claims energy density of more than 298 watt-hours per kilogram at cell level and a maximum DC charging rate of 600 kW at a compatible 800-volt charger. The company says the battery can move from 10 to 80 percent in about 11 minutes, add 70 kWh in as little as 10 minutes, or add 41 kWh in five. It also claims as much as 534 kilometers, approximately 332 miles, of WLTP range can be recovered in 10 minutes under the specified test conditions.

Those are extraordinary claims, but the charger matters as much as the car. Most public DC fast chargers in the United States cannot deliver 600 kW to one passenger vehicle today. Mercedes says the GT 53 automatically switches to 400-volt operation at a 400-volt station, which preserves compatibility but will not reproduce the laboratory-best charging stop. Its onboard AC charger is rated at 11 kW.

The preliminary WLTP range spans 682 to 809 kilometers depending on configuration, or roughly 424 to 503 miles. That is not an EPA estimate, and Mercedes warns in its official technical release that the European figures are preliminary and not yet supported by final type approval. U.S. shoppers should wait for an EPA rating before comparing the GT 53 directly with cars already carrying American labels.

AMG RIDE CONTROL combines air springs with adaptive dampers that adjust compression and rebound independently at each wheel. It remains tucked away at lower speeds, then moves through several positions to manage drag, balance or downforce. An optional active rear diffuser extends the vehicle’s rear contour to reduce resistance at speed. The driver can even deploy the spoiler manually, should ordinary traffic require a little more theater.

The Cabin Tries to Serve Driver and Passengers

The GT 53 may have a low seating position and a steeply raked windshield, but it is still a four-door grand tourer. A 14-inch central display angles toward the driver, and an optional passenger display adds a separate screen without taking over the entire dashboard. The console includes two inductive phone-charging trays, illuminated cupholders and a physical Response Control dial that adjusts accelerator sensitivity independently of the selected drive mode.

Individual rear seats and carefully shaped footwells are intended to make long trips realistic rather than theoretical. Cargo capacity is listed at 14.7 cubic feet, with another 1.4 cubic feet beneath the front hood. The optional SKY CONTROL panoramic roof can switch individual sections between transparent and opaque, adding drama without requiring passengers to wear sunglasses at night.

How It Compares and Who Should Wait

The most direct rival may be the 2027 Porsche Taycan 4S. It also advertises 536 horsepower, reaches 60 mph in a claimed 3.5 seconds with launch control and starts at $131,800 before delivery and options. The 2026 Audi S e-tron GT starts at $127,700, produces as much as 670 horsepower with launch control, carries a 300-mile EPA estimate and accepts up to 320-kW DC charging.

The Lucid Air Touring takes a different approach. It starts at $79,900, offers 620 horsepower, claims 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and carries an EPA-estimated range of as much as 431 miles. It is less overtly theatrical than the AMG, but its combination of space, performance and efficiency makes it impossible to ignore.

Mercedes has not announced U.S. pricing, curb weight or an EPA range for the GT 53. Those missing figures prevent a complete value judgment, especially when the company calls this the attractive entry model. The EPA’s explanation of EV range testing is a useful reminder that American label values include adjustments for real-world factors. Shoppers should also remember that the 600-kW peak is a capability, not a promise that every charging stop will deliver it.

The 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 is scheduled to reach U.S. dealerships in early 2027. On paper, it may be the sensible member of an outrageous family: fast enough to matter, efficient enough to travel and theatrical only when the driver requests it. The unanswered question is whether AMG buyers will accept a digital six-cylinder voice when the acceleration underneath it is entirely real.
