Jaguar Type 01 draws nearly 50,000 expressions of interest as the company rules out a conventional high-sided SUV for its new range.

Jaguar Type 01 Draws Nearly 50,000 Prospects

Jaguar’s reinvention may have divided opinion online, but the company says its forthcoming electric Type 01 is already attracting substantial interest from potential customers.

Rawdon Glover, Managing Director of Jaguar, told me that just under 50,000 people have asked to receive additional information about the four-door GT. He also confirmed that Type 01 will lead a family of distinctly styled Jaguars, although that family will not include a conventional high-sided SUV.

“We’ve had about just under 50,000 people say, I’m really interested, tell me more about the car. I want to come on that journey with you,” Glover said.

These are expressions of interest, not orders, reservations or deposits. Jaguar has been communicating regularly with this group as it gradually reveals the production car. Type 01 will be a battery-electric vehicle built on architecture developed exclusively for Jaguar.

Glover said Jaguar has also held private events where potential clients could see the Type 00 concept and speak directly with the designers and engineers developing Type 01.

“The reaction there was phenomenal in terms of actually from clients,” Glover said. “You know, tell me when I can put my order down.”

Jaguar Says Type 01 Must Be Seen in Person

One of Jaguar’s biggest challenges has been communicating a design that Glover believes does not translate effectively through photographs or phone screens.

“It’s very difficult to photograph, actually,” he said. “And it looks a certain way on social media when you look at it quite flat on the phone.”

Glover said reactions become stronger when people encounter the Type 00 concept or camouflaged Type 01 prototype in person.

“This is a car you really do need to see close up,” he said.

That realization will influence how Jaguar markets the production model. Rather than relying entirely on conventional advertising and dealership displays, the company plans to offer intimate introductions for prospective customers.

“We will want to invite prospects and potential clients to private previews where they can get a very kind of intimate one-to-one experience with us,” Glover said.

“It’s not just, here’s the car. They need to understand some of the why and allow them to have a physical experience. That’s going to be absolutely critical for us.”

The approach gives Jaguar an opportunity to explain how an all-electric car works while showing that powertrain choice does not have to determine a car’s personality.

A Family of New Jaguars Will Follow

Although Jaguar remains focused on launching Type 01, Glover confirmed that it is intended to establish the design language for a broader range.

“There will be a family of vehicles,” he said. “They will all have, you know, the sort of unmistakable Jaguar design language.”

The future vehicles will perform different functions and serve different customer groups. Glover would not reveal their body styles or say when they will arrive.

The decision to begin with a four-door electric GT is strategic. Jaguar is using Type 01 to reestablish the brand in a more exclusive part of the luxury market before filling other spaces in its portfolio.

“Why would you launch with a 4-door GT?” Glover asked. “Well, actually, because we think it’s the best way of reestablishing Jaguar with this platform.”

The dedicated platform gives engineers more freedom over battery placement and proportions. The U.S. Department of Energy explains how electric-vehicle batteries store the energy used by an EV’s motors.

Jaguar Rules Out a Traditional High-Sided SUV

Although SUVs remain critically important to the luxury market, Glover ruled out creating a conventional high-sided Jaguar SUV that would compete directly with Range Rover.

“I’ll tell you what we’re not going to do,” he said. “So what we’re not going to do is to create, for example, a high-sided SUV. Why would we do that?”

“Because actually, A, Range Rover is the best SUV on the planet, in my opinion, and that’s what they do best. And actually, Jaguar shouldn’t be doing that.”

That does not necessarily eliminate every possible Jaguar interpretation of a crossover. Glover acknowledged the importance of the SUV market but said any future entry would require a distinctly different approach.

“We know the SUV sector is hugely important, but what would our take on that be if we were to do that?” he said.

Glover also offered a candid assessment of the previous E-Pace and its relationship with the Range Rover Evoque.

“The E-Pace is structurally very, very similar to the Evoque,” he said. “And actually what we should be looking for in our product portfolio is much greater differentiation.”

Future Jaguars should therefore occupy their own territory within JLR instead of serving as close relatives of Range Rover models.

Jaguar Can Take Risks Range Rover Cannot

Jaguar’s smaller sales volume is being treated as an advantage, giving the company room to experiment with design, technology and positioning.

“Jaguar should be pushing boundaries,” Glover said. “We should be doing things first.”

“That’s one of the advantages that you can do with being one of the smaller volume brands in our portfolio,” he added. “So we can probably take a few more risks than you would do with perhaps from the Range Rover.”

Jaguar expects its customers to be interested in technology, performance and design. More importantly, Glover said, the intended buyer will be comfortable making an individual and potentially polarizing choice.

“The point that connects these clients in whatever country you’re in is a sense of individuality,” he said. “And people increasingly looking for brands that reflect their personality.”

Glover acknowledged that the design will not appeal to everyone.

“For some people, that probably, it’s probably, you know, it’s probably too bold a statement,” he said. “But that’s not the group we’re looking for.”

Electric vehicles sold in the United States must meet the same federal safety standards as conventional vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration provides additional information about electric-vehicle batteries, charging and safety.

Final Development and the October Reveal

Jaguar is putting the finishing touches on how Type 01 delivers its power and responds to the driver.

“We’re putting the final touches to the dynamics of the car, just in terms of just absolutely making sure that the delivery of the power,” Glover said. “The capabilities of the car have really blown us away.”

During my own drive at Jaguar’s Gaydon facility, the car’s composure masked its speed so effectively that 160 mph felt closer to 70, 80 or 90 mph. An engineer reminded me that the track’s speed limit was 150 mph.

The challenge is not simply producing another fast EV. Jaguar must deliver the character drivers associate with the brand.

“Most people kind of say, okay, it’s an EV, so it’s going to be quick, but is it going to have any soul?” Glover said. “Is it going to feel like a Jaguar?”

Jaguar officially revealed the Type 01 interior during Monterey Car Week. Its central spine divides the cabin into four individual spaces, while a low seating position, slim dashboard and hidden-until-needed technology distinguish it from conventional luxury cabins.

Type 01 will be the first production model based on the dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture. It will be designed, developed and built in the United Kingdom. The “0” represents zero tailpipe emissions, while “1” identifies it as the first Jaguar of a new generation.

Jaguar has not yet released final EPA range or charging figures. The Department of Transportation explains why EV charging speeds vary by charger type, while the Environmental Protection Agency provides broader context about electric-vehicle range, charging, emissions and safety.
