2026 Toyota Highlander review: XLE, XSE, Limited and Platinum compared, including hybrid choices, pricing, and which trim fits who best. The 2026 Highlander is the last conventional gas-and-hybrid version before Toyota turns the nameplate into an all-electric three-row SUV for 2027. AWD is now standard, and the range is four gas grades and three hybrids.

For a shopper, that turns the 2026 model into a very specific proposition. Buy it because you want the proven format of a gas or conventional hybrid three-row Toyota, not because it is the newest architecture in the showroom.

2026 Toyota Highlander Review: The Trim Ladder

TrimCurrent base MSRPPowertrainBest for
XLE$46,270 gas / $48,020 hybridGas or hybridMost families
XSE$48,340Gas onlySportier appearance and chassis tuning
Limited$50,725 gas / $52,475 hybridGas or hybridPremium value
Platinum$53,925 gas / $55,675 hybridGas or hybridMaximum convenience

Toyota currently lists a $1,595 delivery, processing and handling charge for Highlander models in most regions, with different charges possible in some states.

Pros

  • Standard AWD on every trim.
  • Hybrid models carry a manufacturer-estimated 35 mpg combined rating.
  • Gas models can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
  • XLE is well equipped; Limited adds useful luxury rather than decoration.

Cons

  • No XSE Hybrid.
  • Hybrid towing falls to 3,500 pounds.
  • Only 16 cubic feet of cargo space sits behind the third row.
  • Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ is older than the Grand Highlander’s 3.0 suite.

XLE Is the Smart Starting Point

XLE already includes heated front seats, SofTex upholstery, a moonroof, second-row sunshades, hands-free power liftgate, wireless phone charging and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Its standard multimedia screen is 8 inches, with a 12.3-inch display available.

Gas XLE uses a 2.4-liter turbo four-cylinder with 265 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, an eight-speed automatic and a 5,000-pound tow rating. Hybrid XLE combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and electric motors for 243 net combined horsepower, electronic on-demand AWD and a 3,500-pound tow rating.

2026 Toyota Highlander XSE

If towing is not important, Hybrid XLE is my first pick. Toyota estimates 35 mpg combined versus 24 mpg for gas, and the current base-price difference is $1,750. Gas XLE is the cleaner answer when the trailer is heavier.

XSE Is for Style, Limited Is for Comfort

XSE is gasoline-only and adds 20-inch black wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, more aggressive bodywork, black exterior trim and Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD. Toyota changed actual chassis hardware, not just the wardrobe. Without road-test notes, I will not pretend to tell you how much sharper it feels.

Limited is easier to justify for most buyers. It adds leather, heated and ventilated front seats, driver memory, a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, 12.3-inch multimedia screen and 11-speaker JBL audio. Hybrid Limited keeps Toyota’s 35-mpg combined estimate.

Limited’s upgrades are things owners use regularly. Hybrid Limited is the premium-value choice; gas Limited makes more sense when the 5,000-pound tow rating matters.

Platinum Is the Luxury Tier, Not the Value Tier

Platinum adds a panoramic glass roof, panoramic view monitor, 10-inch head-up display, digital rear-view mirror and rain-sensing wipers. Hybrid Platinum also brings heated second-row captain’s chairs.

The surround-view camera is easy to defend. In a narrow parking garage, several camera angles can feel less like indulgence and more like diplomacy.

At $53,925 gas or $55,675 hybrid before destination, though, Platinum should trigger a comparison with Toyota’s larger Grand Highlander, which offers 97.5 cubic feet of maximum cargo space and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. Buy Platinum because you specifically want its equipment and the Highlander’s smaller footprint. Otherwise, Limited is the more disciplined purchase.

Gas or Hybrid Is Really a Towing Decision

Every gas Highlander uses the 265-horsepower turbo engine and can tow up to 5,000 pounds. Every hybrid uses the 243-horsepower system, electronic on-demand AWD, and a 3,500-pound maximum tow rating.

Official figure: Toyota publishes a 24-mpg combined estimate for gas models and 35 mpg combined for hybrids. Current specifications list Hybrid XLE at 35 city/35 highway and Hybrid Limited and Platinum at 35 city/34 highway.

If your trailer weighs between 3,500 and 5,000 pounds, buy gas. If you rarely tow and accumulate commuter miles, the hybrid is the more logical specification.

Space, Seating and Technology

The Highlander has three rows and can seat seven or, in certain XLE and Limited configurations, eight with an available second-row bench. Cargo volume is 16 cubic feet behind the third row, 48.4 behind the second and 84.3 with the rear seating folded.

Families who keep every seat occupied should compare the Grand Highlander and Honda Pilot. The Highlander’s smaller footprint, though, can be useful in older garages and tighter parking lots.

Toyota Audio Multimedia supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Limited and Platinum receive the 12.3-inch center display and 11-speaker JBL system as standard equipment. Five USB ports are fitted across the cabin.

Safety Has One IIHS Result Shoppers Should Know

Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ is standard, including automatic emergency braking capability with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, road sign assist and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are also standard.

IIHS rates the 2026 Highlander Good in the small-overlap front and updated side evaluations, but Marginal in the updated moderate-overlap front test. Its standard pedestrian front-crash-prevention system earns Good. Platinum headlights are rated Good; headlights on the other current trims are Acceptable.

That mixed result deserves more attention than simply saying the Highlander has lots of safety equipment. The Grand Highlander also uses the newer Safety Sense 3.0 package.

What Changed for 2026, and Should You Wait for 2027?

The major 2026 change is standard AWD and a simplified trim structure. The much bigger change comes next: Toyota has confirmed that the 2027 Highlander will be an all-electric three-row SUV, with front- and all-wheel-drive versions and a manufacturer-estimated maximum range of up to 320 miles on certain AWD configurations.

Buy the 2026 if you want gas or conventional hybrid power. Wait for the 2027 if an electric three-row Toyota is what you actually want. These are different ownership propositions, not mildly different model years.

Final Verdict: Which Highlander Trim Wins?

Best overall: Hybrid XLE. It combines the equipment most families need, standard AWD and the strongest efficiency case without crossing $50,000 before destination.

Best for towing: Gas XLE. It retains the 5,000-pound rating without charging for luxury equipment that does not increase capability.

Best for style: XSE. It gets the sport-tuned suspension and torque-vectoring AWD, but no hybrid option.

Best premium value: Hybrid Limited. Leather, ventilated front seats, dual 12.3-inch displays and JBL audio meaningfully improve daily use while preserving the hybrid’s efficiency.

Best fully loaded choice: Platinum. Choose it for the cameras, head-up display and panoramic roof. Do not assume the highest trim is automatically the smartest one.

My shopping order is Hybrid XLE first, Hybrid Limited second, and gas XLE whenever towing changes the equation. Platinum is harder to defend against the roomier Grand Highlander. XSE is for buyers who value its sportier look.

2026 Toyota Highlander FAQ

Is every 2026 Toyota Highlander all-wheel drive?

Yes. AWD is standard across the U.S. lineup. Gas XLE uses mechanical AWD, gas XSE, Limited and Platinum use Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD, and hybrids use electronic on-demand AWD.

Which 2026 Highlander gets the best fuel economy?

The hybrids. Toyota estimates 35 mpg combined for the Highlander Hybrid versus 24 mpg combined for gasoline models. No independent Test Miles economy result was supplied for this analysis.

Can the 2026 Highlander seat eight?

Yes, in certain configurations. Toyota offers a second-row bench on some XLE and Limited versions. Other configurations use captain’s chairs and seat seven. Check the exact vehicle before buying.

How much can the 2026 Highlander tow?

Gas models are rated up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. Hybrid models are rated up to 3,500 pounds. Regular towers should also account for passengers, cargo and trailer tongue weight.

Should I buy a 2026 Highlander or wait for 2027?

Buy the 2026 for gasoline or conventional hybrid power. Wait for the 2027 if you specifically want a battery-electric three-row Toyota. The next Highlander is a major powertrain and platform change, not a routine refresh.
