2022 Nissan GT-R NISMO Special Edition Unveiled

When the Nissan GT-R hit U.S. shores in 2009, it shook the sports car world with insane performance stats normally reserved for exotics costing significantly more money. Although the styling has evolved a bit since the first GT-R in America, it still has the same distinctive look that sets it apart from typical supercars. Today Nissan takes the wraps off the latest version of this extreme supercar — the GT-R NISMO Special Edition.

The GT-R NISMO Special Edition stands out with NISMO-exclusive Stealth Gray paint that offers a subtle contrast to the clear-coated carbon fiber hood. Red pinstriping and accents up front add a splash of color with exposed carbon fiber throughout the design.

Nissan shod this special GT-R with exclusive 20-inch RAYS forged aluminum wheels, with red accents, fitted with Dunlop SP Sport Maxx high-performance tires. Yellow Nissan / Brembo brakes complete the look.

© Nissan North AmericaBig Power
This latest GT-R draws power from the GTR NISMO VR38DETT 3.8-liter twin turbo V6 engine producing a plentiful 600 horsepower and 481 lb-ft of torque. The Special Edition uses high-precision, weight-balanced parts for the piston rings, connecting rods, crankshaft and valve gear components dialed in with tighter tolerances. All this wizardry works to deliver even quicker engine revs and turbo spooling.

© Nissan North AmericaHand Assembled
Every GT-R engine is hand assembled in a special clean room by master technicians known as takumi. Each Special Edition will feature a special aluminum takumi certification plate located on the front of each engine.

© Nissan North AmericaDual-Clutch Gearbox
All GT-Rs are equipped with a 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The GT-R has never been available with a manual transmission in the U.S.; however, the gears shift much quicker than any human. All that power gets managed via an ATTESA E-TS all-wheel-drive system. During normal operation, 100 percent of the power gets sent to the rear wheels; however, when needed up to 50 percent of the power can be sent to the front wheels.

Based on personal experience with the GT-R Track Edition (which uses the same NISMO engine), shifting and power transference for the GT-R NISMO Special Edition also happens in milliseconds with no needed input from the driver. From behind the wheel, all that’s required of the driver is putting the right foot down and holding on. Acceleration is strong and immediate — Nissan says 60 mph comes up in less than 3 seconds, and there’s certainly no reason to doubt this claim.

This special version will be the first GT-R to wear the recently updated Nissan logo.
