2022 Kia EV6 All-Electric Crossover: First Look

Today marks a watershed moment for Kia as it debuts the EV6 crossover, the Korean brand’s first dedicated electric vehicle. The EV6 represents the first vehicle of Kia’s Plan S electrification strategy to deliver 11 all-new electrified models by 2026. Built on the automaker’s new electric-global modular platform, the 2022 Kia EV6 crossover has a 114.2-inch wheelbase equivalent to the Telluride SUV.

Expected to have a U.S. EPA-estimated 300-mile range, the EV6 will be offered in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive with a front electric motor. Kia anticipates the EV6 will go on sale in the U.S. in early 2022. The high-performance EV6 GT is scheduled to arrive in late 2022 with 576 horsepower, and it will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in less than 3.5 seconds.

The 2022 Kia EV6 features a low-mounted, underfloor nickel-cobalt-manganese battery pack available in either 58.0 kWh or 77.4 kWh sizes. The 58.0 kWh battery gets paired with a 160 kW rear motor for a total output of 157 horsepower, or 218 horsepower when paired with the larger 77.4 kWh battery. The all-wheel-drive version combines the 77.4 kWh battery with a 70 kW motor at the front axle and a 160 kW motor at the rear axle for a total output of 313 horsepower. The top-of-the-line EV6 GT pairs the 77.4 kWh battery with a 160 kW front motor and a 270 kW rear motor for a total output of 576 horsepower.

The 2022 Kia EV6 features a 400V to 800V multi-charging architecture for ultra-fast DC charging that operates on DC chargers with speeds from 50 kWh to 350 kWh. With 800V fast-charging from a 350 kWh charger, nearly 70 miles of range can be added in under 5 minutes and up to 210 miles of range in under 18 minutes. The 11 kW onboard charger for Level 2 charging will recharge from 10 to 100 percent in 7 hours 10 minutes.

The 2022 Kia EV6 can also function as a power source for computers, camping and tailgating. The EV6 has vehicle-to-load functionality that allows electricity to flow from the battery to an integrated charging control unit that provides 1900 watts of power. A 110V power outlet is located in front of the second-row seat base, and there is an adapter to draw power from the external charge port. From a full charge, power can be drawn for approximately 36 consecutive hours.

Limited to 1,500 units, the Kia EV6 First Edition will be available by reservation beginning June 3, 2021. The First Edition features standard EV6 styling with black wheel arches and dual-motor AWD via the 77.4 kWh battery. Additional features include an augmented reality head-up display, remote smart parking assist, a wide sunroof, 20-inch wheels and a premium 14-speaker Meridian audio system. The First Edition will be offered in three unique color combinations: Glacier with dark green seats, Urban Yellow with black seats and Steel Gray Matte with black seats.

The Kia EV6 exterior design is a collaboration between Kia’s three design studios in Seoul, Frankfurt and Irvine, California, with a new design philosophy called Opposites United that resulted in the EV6. Design elements include a Digital Tiger grille that shows Kia’s latest tiger nose design, headlights with a sequential dynamic light pattern, flush door handles, a high rear deck and full-width rear light cluster.

Inside, the EV6 offers 102 cubic-feet of passenger room in a modern, eco-friendly interior with extensive use of recycled plastic, vegan leather surfaces for some trims, LED lighting and slim front seats to maximize rear-seat room. The instrument cluster and infotainment screens are dual 12-inch TFT screens that form a wide, horizontal curved display. An available augmented reality head-up display projects graphics in a three-dimensional image that appears to be over the hood of the car. As a crossover, the EV6 has 27.7 cubic-feet of cargo room behind the second row and 53.5 cubic-feet of cargo room with the second-row seats folded.

The 2022 Kia EV6 also offers a long list of standard and available safety and convenience features including a surround view monitor, parking collision-avoidance assist-reverse and remote smart parking assist. In addition, advanced driver assistance systems include blind-spot avoidance assist, highway driving assist II, navigation-based smart cruise control-curve and rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist.
