Koenigsegg Gemera: 250 mph Family Car

Swedish automaker Koenigsegg is well-known in automotive realms for building extreme sports cars, but sports cars are typically two-seaters — not the best choice for group transportation. With that in mind, Koenigsegg created Gemera — the ultimate high-performance family car. With luxurious seating for four, advanced technology and extreme performance, the Gemera is truly one of a kind. This unique sports car recently made its North American debut at the 2021 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

“Ultimate performance has belonged to the world of two-seaters with very limited luggage space — until now,” said Koenigsegg CEO and founder Christian von Koenigsegg. “The Gemera is a completely new category of car where extreme megacar meets spacious interior and ultimate environmental consciousness. We call it a Mega-GT,” Koenigsegg noted.

Although unlike anything else the Swedish car company has produced, the Koenigsegg Gemera still carries many of the brand’s styling cues. Some of these signature signs include the wraparound windshield, hidden A-pillars, short overhangs and large side air intakes.

And in keeping with other models, the Gemera features Koenigsegg Automated Twisted Synchrohelix Actuation Doors, or KATSAD for those into the whole brevity thing. Doors run full length of the cabin — thanks to the strong carbon-fiber monocoque there is no need for a B-Pillar. This provides a wide space for easy access to front or rear seats.

The Gemera rides on Koenigsegg third-generation Aircore carbon fiber wheels with available center locking — 21 inches in diameter up front, 22 inches on the rear. The wheels are fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S 295/30 ZR21 in front, 317/30 ZR22 at the rear. Michelin Cup R3 tires are also available. Stopping power comes courtesy of large ventilated ceramic brakes with 6-piston calipers in front, 4-piston in the rear.

The stunning Koenigsegg Gemera generates power from a 2.0-liter 3-cylinder twin-turbo Freevalve engine (nicknamed The Friendly Giant) that produces 600 horsepower, teamed with three electric motors — one for each rear wheel and one on the crankshaft, which directs energy to the front wheels along with the internal combustion engine. Total output is a jaw-dropping 1700 horsepower and an astounding 2,581 lb-ft of torque.

According to this Swedish carmaker, the tiny 3-cylinder motor is more efficient and cleaner than a typical 4-cylinder powerplant. The Gemera can travel up to 50 km (31 miles) in pure EV mode as well as reach 186 mph without engaging the internal combustion engine. Total range between fueling stops can be more than 620 miles — depending on driver habits and vehicle occupancy, as well as terrain, weather and road conditions.

With so much power and torque on tap, the Gemera produces some outrageous performance stats. The four-seater can sprint to 62 mph in a mere 1.9 seconds with a top speed expected to approach 250 mph.

“The Gemera is Koenigsegg’s most frugal and fastest accelerating car ever,” says Koenigsegg. “It will go from 0–100 km/h in 1.9 seconds in one gear — thanks to the proven and patented Koenigsegg Direct Drive. The Gemera will even have over 1600 Nm of torque (1180 ft-lb) ‘left’ at 350 km/h — making it a contender for the fastest accelerating car to 400 km/h (249 mph). Time will tell,” observed the CEO.

To properly manage this megacar’s prodigious muscle, the Gemera employs all-wheel drive, all-wheel torque vectoring and all-wheel steering. The two rear e-motors can adjust the power balance between the rear wheels, while an open differential on the front axle features a wet clutch pack to direct power left or right. An independent rear-wheel steering system provides additional agility.

This extreme sports car offers room for four adults in a luxurious cabin outfitted with numerous features such as heated and cooled cupholders, front- and rear-seat infotainment displays, a Wi-Fi hotspot, tri-zone climate control, memory foam heated seats, exterior and interior cameras, and an 11-speaker high-end audio system.

The Gemera also has space for four pieces of custom luggage — three in the rear boot and one in the front.

Only 300 copies of the Gemera — Koenigsegg’s ultimate family sports car — are expected to be produced, with the price coming in around $1.9 million.
