Every year in America electric vehicles become more mainstream, with many choices now available in practically every vehicle category. Last year Ford announced its entry in the full-size pickup truck segment, and today Chevrolet follows suit with the introduction of an all-electric 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV pickup. With more than 600 horsepower available and an estimated driving range of 400 miles, the new Silverado EV offers plenty of utility and performance in an efficient, clean-running truck package.

The Silverado EV is not simply an electric version of Chevy’s current half-ton pickup. Chevrolet engineers and designers developed this new model as a full-electric truck from the ground up. Built on GM’s advanced Ultium EV platform, the truck’s new architecture uses a 24-module Ultium battery pack integrated within the vehicle structure. This design enables increased strength, durability and performance while still providing a comfortable ride.

“Chevrolet has constantly revolutionized the Silverado franchise to make it the powerhouse it is today,” said Vice President of Chevrolet Steve Hill. “The Ultium Platform is a critical enabler of next-level pickup truck performance for both fleet and retail customers, whether they are currently driving a Silverado or are considering a pickup for the first time,” Hill observed.

All Silverado EVs will be four-door crew cabs with exterior proportions more streamlined than the standard Silverado. Without the need for a grille, the pickup’s front end design directs air down the body sides to reduce drag and turbulence. A distinctive light bar and lighted bowtie add to the high-tech look of the truck, with slim running lights wrapping around the corners.

While the look of the Silverado EV has a high-tech vibe, the truck’s overall shape is reminiscent of Chevy’s Avalanche pickup truck, including its unified bed and cab as well as an innovative midgate. Chevrolet discontinued the Avalanche in 2013.

“We had no constraints when it came to designing the Silverado EV with dramatic style and flexible utility because we didn’t need to work around a traditional propulsion system,” said Phil Zak, executive director of Chevrolet Design. “The Ultium Platform allowed us to redefine what it means to offer expansive new storage and utility possibilities,” Zak noted.

Chevrolet will come to market with two variants of the Silverado EV — the RST First Edition and the fleet-oriented WT. The Silverado EV WT’s powertrain will deliver 510 horsepower and 615 lb-ft of torque — enough muscle to tow up to 8,000 pounds or haul up to 1,200 pounds of cargo. Following the initial launch, Chevrolet plans to introduce a more powerful fleet model capable of towing up to 20,000 pounds.

“GM Fleet has long provided customers with great products and services, an exceptional customer experience and innovative solutions to meet their unique business needs,” said Ed Peper, vice president of GM Fleet. “We’re excited to launch the Silverado EV, providing customers with a true work-capable truck to help them begin the transition to an electric fleet and assist them in achieving their own sustainability goals,” Peper enthused.

Joining the Silverado EV WT at launch, the RST First Edition will be the flagship of the electric truck lineup. With dual motors that make up the e4WD system, the RST boasts up to 664 horsepower and more than 780 lb-ft of torque for extreme capability and performance. The RST will be able to tow up to 10,000 pounds, haul up to 1,300 pounds of cargo or haul its way to 60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds. Also standard on the RST First Edition are an adaptive air suspension, four-wheel steering, a Multi-Flex tailgate and innovative Multi-Flex Midgate.

Chevrolet estimates the new Silverado EV will have a driving range of up to 400 miles between charges. When charging at a 350kw DC fast charging station, the big truck should gain about 100 miles of range in a mere 10 minutes. The Silverado EV can also provide external power via its PowerBase charging system. Up to 10 outlets are available, providing a total of 10.2 kW of power for work or recreational needs. The system can also be used to charge another electric vehicle or even provide energy to a home during a power outage.

Since the 2024 Silverado EV has no internal combustion engine taking up space under the hood, Chevrolet turned this front space into a lockable, weatherproof compartment. Chevrolet calls this “frunk” (front trunk) an eTrunk, and it has enough room to fit a large suitcase. The automaker will offer accessories to maximize the space.

One clever innovation of the new Silverado EV is a Multi-Flex Midgate. The truck bed is 5 feet 11 inches in length in standard mode; however, the Midgate behind the second-row seats can be folded in, allowing cargo to extend into the cabin. This creates space to haul items as long as nine feet — with the tailgate closed.

Since the Multi-Flex Midgate has a split configuration, cargo can extend into the cab while keeping one rear seat available for a passenger. An available tonneau cover turns the entire space into a weatherproof, lockable storage compartment.

The RST First Edition will feature a 17-inch LCD freeform infotainment display paired with an 11-inch configurable driver display. The driver also has a large multi-color head-up display.

Designers of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV were able to take advantage of the vehicle’s Ultium platform to provide a more spacious cabin. The platform configuration allows the second row to be pushed rearward, which provides better space for taller rear-seat occupants.

Chevrolet will produce the new Silverado EV at GM’s Factory ZERO Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center. According to Chevrolet, the facility has been retooled via a $2.2 billion investment specifically for EV production.

The WT variant of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV pickup will debut in spring 2023 at a base price of $39,900, followed by the RST First Edition in the fall of 2023 at $105,000. After the First Edition, Chevrolet plans to come to market with a range of Silverado EV offerings including the Trail Boss, with prices ranging between the WT and RST.
