2022 Porsche 911 GT3
Porsche has a long history of success in racing, as well as a reputation for transferring race-proven technology to its high-performance sports cars for the street. The latest example is the 2022 911 GT3 — the first GT3 variant of the latest generation 911 with a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter engine, motorsports-derived front suspension and extensive use of lightweight materials to reduce weight.
Born in Motorsport

The 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 is powered by a 4.0-liter horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine nearly identical to the track-only 911 GT3 Cup customer racecar that competes in race series around the world. In the GT3 street car, the engine revs to 9000 rpm and produces 502 horsepower and 346 lb-ft of torque. The engine gets paired with either the 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission or an available 6-speed manual. According to Porsche specifications, the 2022 911 GT3 will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and has a top track speed of 197 mph.
The new double-wishbone front suspension of the 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 is derived from the 911 RSR and 911 GT3 Cup racecars, but engineered for street use. Porsche says the new design offers more direct, precise steering while also improving stability in high-speed corners, as well as better control over uneven surfaces. The 911 GT3 does not share suspension components with current 911 models and — as with previous GT3 variants — features a multi-link rear suspension.
Based on the 911 Carrera, the 2022 911 GT3 has a 1.9 inch wider front track and an aerodynamically optimized body with a new front fascia including integrated cooling intakes, an adjustable front lip spoiler, an adjustable front diffuser and side skirts to optimize airflow around the wheels. At the rear, the GT3 features a wing attached by swan-neck connections as well as a fixed spoiler and rear diffuser. Through the use of lightweight materials — including carbon fiber-reinforced plastic for the hood, rear wing and rear spoiler — and lightweight noise-insulated glass, the new GT3 weighs virtually the same as its predecessor.
The amount of downforce on the 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 can be tuned for street or track via the adjustable front lip spoiler, front diffuser and rear wing. In the standard setting for the rear wing, downforce is up to 50 percent greater than the previous GT3, and when both the front and rear settings are set up for optimum performance — and not intended for street use — downforce increases to approximately 150 percent.
Standard brakes for the 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 include 408 mm steel front rotors — a 28 mm increase over the previous version and the same diameter as the 911 Turbo, yet 17 percent lighter due to a narrower friction ring. The optional Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes include 410 mm front rotors and 390 mm rear rotors for a weight savings of nearly 50 percent. Special cooling channels in the rotors improve high-temperature performance as well as provide high-efficiency brake ventilation.
Wheels and Tires
New forged alloy wheels specific to GT variants are 20-inch diameter in the front and 21-inch diameter in the rear with an increase of 1.0-inch width in front and 1.0-inch diameter in the rear compared to the previous wheels. Ultra-high-performance summer tires specifically developed for Porsche are 10 mm wider both front and rear, measuring 255/35 ZR 20 at the front and 315/30 ZR 21 at the rear. Porsche also offers a street-legal track tire previously reserved for GT3 RS. The new 911 GT3 equipped with these tires lapped the famed Nurburgring-Nordschleife racetrack in 6:59.927 — more than 17 seconds quicker than the previous 911 GT3.
Most of the 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 interior is similar to other 911s, but the standard GT3 Multifunction Sport steering wheel is 360 mm in diameter and covered with Race-Tex. It also includes a drive mode switch so the driver can switch between settings. Standard seats are 4-way Sport Seats Plus, with 18-way Sport Seats Plus and carbon fiber Full Bucket Seats available as options. The Full Bucket Seats are approximately 26 pounds lighter than the standard seats.
For the Track
The 2020 Porsche 911 GT3’s Track Screen mode reduces the amount of information around the analog tachometer, with tire pressure and water temperature on the left and a configurable screen on the right. The Chrono Package adds an analog stopwatch on the dash, a digital one in the instrument cluster and Lap Trigger support. Lap Trigger allows lap-time analysis and comparison on a smartphone using the Porsche Track Precision app.
Porsche designed a special PDK gear selector for 911 GT3 based on the manual transmission gearshift lever. Pressing the shift pattern on top of the shifter unlocks it to allow manual changes via the lever. The PDK can also be shifted manually using paddles located behind the steering wheel.
On Sale Date
The 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 is scheduled to arrive for the U.S. market in fall of 2021. Pricing and availability will be announced closer to that time.
