With only a smattering of full-size, fully capable SUVs still available in America, competition remains fierce to win the utility-focused consumer in the big SUV space. And now Ford Motor Company refocuses its time-honored SUV to take on all contenders and exceed consumer expectations with an updated 2022 Expedition. In addition to infusing the new Expedition with safety and tech upgrades, the Dearborn-based automaker introduces two new variants: the off-road-capable Timberline Edition and the sporty Stealth Edition. The current-gen Expedition arrived for the 2017 model year, and Ford says that vehicle tripled its full-size SUV market share in the last five years, so the company hopes to continue the trend with the 2022 Ford Expedition.

The 2022 Ford Expedition makes a fresh statement with new standard-equipment LED headlights, updated taillights as well as new wheel designs. At the top of the lineup, the Expedition Platinum gets a new twin-spar mesh grille with fog lights and chrome accents.

To take on fresh challengers to the large SUV space such as the new Jeep Wagoneer, Ford introduces the 2022 Expedition Timberline Edition. Created to be the most capable Expedition ever, this new edition features an impressive 10.6 inches of ground clearance, a wider track, improved approach and departure angles and 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler AT tires. “Timberline sets a new standard with full-size SUV customers who need more passenger space, great off-road capability and a basecamp for life’s journeys,” said Mike Kipley, Ford Expedition chief engineer.

To deepen its trail-tackling cred, the 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline has proper off-road tires, raised ground clearance and a 2-speed transfer case, as well as underbody shielding from the F-150 Raptor. Other upgrades include Trail Turn Assist — a system that can reduce the Expedition’s turning radius for improved control around hairpin turns one might find on a trail. The new Ford Bronco also employs this TTA system.

The 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline is equipped with the Blue Oval’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine that produces 440 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. Not only does this unit possess enough power to handle rough terrain, it also gives the Expedition enough capability to tow up to 9,300 pounds.

Beyond the bigger tires and wider stance that make the 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline Edition a standout, this new variant also has a unique grille as well as Active Orange exterior accents.

While the Timberline Edition is all about extending the adventure off pavement, the 2022 Expedition Stealth Edition Performance Package adds a level of sportiness to the big, new SUV. Available on the Expedition Limited, the Stealth Edition Performance Package also uses the powerful EcoBoost V6 engine with 440 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque.

Although Ford’s branding folks decided to call this new variant the Stealth Edition, it would be extremely difficult to remain stealthy in this full-size Expedition. Rather than hiding, this special version gets a gloss-black exterior treatment for the grille, mirror caps, roof rails, running boards, rear bumper skidplate, fog light bezels and headlight / taillight housings. All Ford emblems as well as badging are also black.

Adding to the overall performance proposition of the 2022 Ford Expedition Stealth Edition are 22-inch premium black aluminum wheels that frame red brake calipers.

Ford introduces new hands-free driver-assist technology on the 2022 Expedition Platinum. BlueCruise builds on the company’s adaptive cruise control that already features stop-and-go, lane centering and speed sign recognition, making it possible to drive hands free on most divided highways. Drivers are still required to monitor the road; BlueCruise features a cabin-facing camera that ensures the driver’s eyes stay on the road — no jumping in the back seat to watch a movie.

The 2022 Ford Expedition comes with Ford’s SYNC 4 infotainment system, or the large SUV can be equipped with the latest SYNC 4A system that features a 15.5-inch high-definition touchscreen display. SYNC 4A uses machine learning to determine the driver’s preferred choices and always present these in the forefront. We used this system previously in the all-electric Ford Mach-E, and found it to be one of the most intuitive and easy-to-use systems available today.

When the 2022 Ford Expedition goes on sale, the company will offer it with a Bang & Olufsen Unleashed Sound System featuring 22 speakers and a subwoofer to produce 360-degree surround sound. Rear-seat passengers will also have the opportunity to enjoy a new entertainment system with high-definition touchscreens and the ability to play games, listen to music, stream videos or watch downloaded programs. They system includes 16 gigabytes of storage.

A wide range of driver-assist features will be available on the 2022 Ford Expedition. The high-tech systems include Road Edge Detection — a steering system that helps keep the Expedition in its lane; Intersection Assist — a system using camera and radar to detect oncoming traffic when the driver is attempting a left turn, braking as necessary to avoid a collision; Reverse Brake Assist — automatically applies brakes when reversing and a car, object or pedestrian are detected; and Evasive Steering Assist — assists with emergency maneuvers around a vehicle that may have suddenly stopped in the Expedition’s path.

With the capability to pull up to 9,300 pounds, the 2022 Expedition makes towing incredibly easy with available Pro Trailer Backup Assist 2.0. Using rear-camera and park-aid sensors to detect the trailer, the system allows the driver to steer the trailer using a control knob and backup screen. The latest version no longer requires installation of a target sticker on the trailer, nor input of the trailer length — it’s all automated.
